Selecting a Metal 3D Printer: Build Volume vs. Resolution

1Build Volume Requirements

Small-format machines (100×100×100mm) target dental, jewelry, and micro-component production. Mid-format (250×250×300mm) covers most industrial prototyping and tooling. Large-format (400×400×400mm+) serves aerospace structural parts and multi-part batches. Larger build volumes require proportionally longer build times and higher gas consumption.

2Layer Thickness & Resolution

20–30µm layers deliver the finest resolution for medical implants and complex internal channels. 50–60µm layers balance quality and build speed for general industrial parts. 80–100µm layers maximize throughput for near-net-shape parts that will be post-machined.

3Material Qualification

Verify the machine's validated material library includes your target alloys. Common qualifications: 316L stainless, Ti-6Al-4V, Inconel 718, AlSi10Mg, and CoCr. Custom material development adds 3–6 months and $20K–$50K to your timeline.
